triple point, 2008

This sculpture is based on the triple point of water. This is a condition at 0.001 centigrade, where water exists in its three states at the same time, water as vapour, as a liquid and solid as ice. The material used for this sculpture is polycarbonate, that has the quality of total transparency. The shape of the sculpture is based on a ice rock, but it is only the crust of a ice rock, the sculpture is hollow on the inside. This crust is putted into the pound(first state of water is already present), in front of the building, because of this there will be a temperature difference between the inside of the sculpture and the outside. As a consequence that the water inside of the sculpture will partly vaporize and the second state of water will be present, water as vapour. The vaporized water can't escape and is trapped inside the sculpture, because of that the transparent sculpture will become white, that looks and represents the third state, solid water as ice. In the morning the sculpture will look like a solid ice rock and during the day it will become more transparent. This sequence will repeat itself every day with small differences, on sunny and warm days for example stronger than on colder days.
